  • Statement:

My name is Lamont Yeakey, and I seek your vote for Election Website to the KPFK-FM Listener Sponsor Board of directors. I am employed by California State University, Los Angeles, where I teach United States history to approximately 450 to 500 students annually.

I am a current member of KPFK-FM’s Listener Sponsor Board and seek your support to continue serving this radio station for a number of reasons. I believe that I can bring much needed experience in helping the tation continue its important work devoted to the maintenance of an open, free, and democratic society through the medium of public broadcastin. I think that I can help the station promote an intelligent, progressive, multicultural, multiethnic, national and international programming. While it is necessary, indeed essential, to keep an open society where national origins, gender, class, sexual orientation, religious (or lack thereof) practices, cultural, ethnic, and philosophical differences are permitted, a primary function of my work is to oppose intolerance and injustices that demean and diminish any human being. Working for KPFK is my way of maintaining and advancing the objective of Pacifica in concert with the goals and objectives of its founder(s) in adherence to its mission.

I have and currently teach a variety of courses treating U.S. political, social and economic topics. For example I currently teach courses on the U.S. civil rights movement, America during the Great Depression and World War II, McCarthyism, the Cold War, immigration, and numerous other issues affecting contemporary American life.

Moreover, I am a member of California Faculty Association, Organization of American Historians, American Historical Association, NAACP and contribute to the ACLU, Lawyers Guild, Amnesty International, Sierra Club, Paul Robeson Center of greater Los Angeles and other organizations too numerous to list here. All immigrants must be treated fairly and decently. All women must have complete unqualified equality with men. I believe that workers must unionize and that all of us must organize against war and for justice and peace in this world.

KPFK is unique and special in providing an essential and critical component to democratic practice in this society. I seek to be of service and advance the best objectives of this station in the mission to enlighten, politically empower, economically strengthen, spiritually ennoble and culturally enrich all who live on this Earth.
