Candidate Profile

I am writing to explain why I am running for the KPFK Station Board.

I have been a volunteer at KPFK since 2004. I have answered phones, set up tables, taken out trash, picked up food and ice, and even assisted in the construction of the new driveway. I am an avid listener to a variety of the shows on KPFK, including those in Spanish.

I actually think that the station is in good hands and making positive changes, but I wanted to find another way to contribute to the station, while also feeding my vanity.

What I appreciate the most about the station is programming that is designed to examine various issues in depth, usually from an alternative or progressive point of view, while also inviting the opposing point of view from time to time. Even though some listeners are weary of hearing the point of view, I think that we can only formulate effective arguments for our own beliefs by exposing ourselves to our rivals' ideas. We can do this and still preach to our choir.

I have participated in a number of fund drives and have almost taken in as much in donations as I have consumed in meals between pledge calls. While I enjoy the fund drives and understand their importance, I also wonder if we can find some way to raise funds without depriving loyal contributing listeners of their favorite shows. I know that the station is exploring one new method of raising funds on eBay, which I support.

I know that our membership department works hard on a limited budget to keep subscriptions and premiums up to date. I know, however, that subscribers do not always receive their premiums, because they tell me so during the fund drive. I'd like to find a way to get premiums out so that we don't disappoint those who are actually supporting the station.

Lastly, I want to help those who are already volunteering to be offered other chores that might interest them.
