Name:

Steve A. Brooks

Expertise:

IT Network Administrator, power utility worker, union activist, BA in psychology

Endorsements:

  • Committee to Strengthen KPFK
  • Statement:

My name is Steven Brooks and I’m running for KPFK’s Local Station Board. I am a longtime listener of KPFK and, in recent years, that has been primarily via the Internet. I believe there is room for the improvement and enhancement of KPFK’s Internet services. I also feel that there are untapped opportunities for fundraising on the Internet.

Further, I’d like to see KPFK strengthen its sense of membership community. KPFK should have frequent interaction with its members and, if elected, I’ll work to make that a reality.

My background is varied. During my career I have been an IT network administrator and a power utility worker. I’ve been active in the IBEW union and in local progressive political groups. I have a degree in psychology and am very familiar with the sociology of groups. I’ve operated within a bureaucratic environment all of my adult life and I know how to work with groups to accomplish goals. I’ve headed teams, worked under deadline pressure, and I know how to hold people accountable.

In short, I have the qualities required to be an effective member of the Local Station Board. The Local Station Board is the members’ voice in the process of running the radio station, primarily via oversight, but also by bringing in ideas and resources otherwise untapped by the Station. I feel that through good governance and constant vigilance, regarding adherence to KPFK’s mission statement, KPFK can not only survive, but thrive, in the years to come.

Of utmost importance to me is the Mission Statement directive that the Station provide a unique function within the community, that is, to offer information and other resources that cannot be found elsewhere. That’s why I’m a KPFK listener and it is in a quest to preserve and protect that privilege that I’m asking for your vote for KPFK’s Local Station Board.
